Múrias Centeno is pleased to announce the opening of the second solo exhibition “done well done” by the artist Secundino Hernández (born in Madrid, Spain, 1975). Lives and works between Madrid and Berlin.

The painting of Secundino Hernández overlap different times of an energetic intervention, vibrant, but at the same time, contained and well aware of the finitude of the support. We can sense the different stratigraphic layers over the canvas surface, a working process almost resembling a form of meditation for the artist, a daily exercise in seeking the plastic translation of a particular relationship to the world. Human figure, landscape, horizon are all reflected in lines and chromatic spots in a dynamic continuum, approaching drawing and painting in different planes. Secundino combines abstract elements and vaguely figurative, the sweeping gesture, vigorous and the minutia of small detail. The succession of different “paces” that we can feel in his work reflect the influences that collect the pictorial tradition. Hokusai, El Greco, Goya, Guston, Picabia, Michaux to name a few, converge in a plastic identity that Secundino Hernández has set over his artistic career, always paying particular attention to material research and seeking repeatedly, new working methods and processes in the studio.

Hernández has recently had solo exhibitions at Maison Louis Carré, Bazoches-sur-Guyonne, France (2014); Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna, Austria (2007, 2010, 2014); Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki, Finland (2010, 2014); Galerie Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid, Spain (2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014); Galerie Bärbel Grässlin (2013) and Galeria Nuno Centeno, Porto, Portugal (2011). He has also participated in group shows including Das Allerletze Prof. Winkler Stipendium at Kunstverein Weiden, Austria (2013); Alone Together at the Rubell Family Collection / Contemporary Arts Foundation, Miami, USA (2013); Dialogos DKV – Patio Herreriano at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Espanol, Valladolid, Spain (2013); Mendes Wood DM, Brazil, São Paulo (2012); Berlin Status 1 at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2012) and Berlin Klondyke 2011 at Art Center Los Angeles, USA (2011). His work is in numerous institutional and private collections, including Museo Patio Herreriano, Valladolid, Spain; Helga de Alvear Foundation, Cáceres, Spain; The Rubell Family Collection, Miami, USA; Kunstdepot Göschenen, Switzerland and the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada.
