Galeria Nuno Centeno is pleased to announce “Raw, mid raw” the first solo show and appearence ever in Portugal of the artist Secundino Hernández.

Secundino Hernández (1975), lives and works in Berlin and is known for his expressive paintings that radiate youthful energy. His new language of form is almost abstract and figurative, yet powerful in its insistence to lead the gaze across large canvases. Hernández transforms the simple surface with strong, black, cartoon-like contours that are in a stark contrast with the minimalist canvas. The colour areas create a three-dimensionality that increases the impact of Hernández’s expressive brush statements. Proficient compositions allow the artist to combine different elements towards a harmonious whole.

Eclecticism is indeed one of the main characteristics of Secundino Hernández work. The need to absorb the different traditions that make the heap of art history forces the artist to develop a continous exercise of integration and confrontation of his own experience with the one of all the painting absorbed so far. It’s a kind of historicist work, pointing to art and life from a deep sense of individuality and subjectivity.

Hernández studied painting at the Complutense University of Madrid and has had several solo exhibitions across Europe: “Raw, mid raw” Galeria Nuno Centeno 2011; “Gracias por girar”, Galería Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid 2011; Galerie Krinzinger, Viena 2010; Galerie Forsblom, Helsinki 2010; “La tierra es redonda” Galería Heinrich Ehrhardt, Madrid 2009; “Una era tu madre” Art Cologne, Galería Heinrich Ehrhardt, Colonia 2008; “Secundino Hernández” Krinzinger Projekte, Viena 2007; Galería Luis Adelantado, Valencia 2007; and others.
