Born in Portugal, 1973
Lives and works in Porto, Portugal

Her work operates in an area where the boundaries between so-called high culture and popular culture are inevitably merging. Far removed from the convenient formalism that runs through a significant portion of contemporary creation, she has developed an activity anchored in drawing – where her visually and conceptually robust projects are underpinned by various types of reminiscences. Whether involving works that revisit her family’s past, or enquireies related to Portugal, as well as political and social idiosyncrasies.

Although Carla Filipe also works directly with three-dimensional works and space, her most familiar terrain, as stated above, is drawing – which she mixes together with writing in a kind of uninterrupted streams of consciousness. One of the factors that underlines the effectiveness of this modus operandi derives precisely from this procedural dimension, wherein the subjects and respective artistic treatment collapse into their own distinctive dimension, which we may designate as – archeology of the present.

Carla Filipe studied Fine Arts – Sculpture in Faculdade de Belas-Artes (Universidade do Porto). From 2003 to 2007, she is co-founder of two artist-run projects in Porto – Salão Olímpico and Projecto Apêndice that become the biggest references of that type of project in town. In 2009, she won a scholarship from the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian for a residency at ACME Studios (London). In 2014 the artist was invited to complete a residency at AIR Antwerpen (a collaboration with Kunsthalle Lissabon). In 2015 was invited to The Rauschenberg Residency, Florida, USA.

  • As Primas da Bulgária, 2013

Author´s edition, portuguese, english and bulgarian, published by Kunsthalle Lissabon, 300 copies, 2013

“As Primas da Bulgária” (Cousins from Bulgaria) is an artist book that documents the research into young Portuguese citizens who went to study in the Socialist countries immediately after the April 25, 1974 revolution. Given the general lack of documentation on this subject, and using personal stories from the students, and how they now relate to those memories, this work documents, explores and reconstructs, in a fairly idiosyncratic manner, a largely unknown episode in contemporary Portuguese history.

“Boletim looks like the magazine of the Portuguese Railway. It simulates the magazine of the Company house staff from the 1960s, however it contains articles on recent matters. Boletim’s first number is dedicated to type of architecture commissioned by the Railway Company: Railway stations, houses for the workers, workshops and social projects. The examples are set mainly in Entroncamento, a small town born around the railway station, which is still operating.”

Artist book published after Carla Filipe’s residency in London (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation residency at ACME Studios, London, 2009-2010)“[…] What is distributed over the 64 pages the book is Carla Filipe’s work, which, being informed by its reference to pre-existing writing and drawing, should not share the same location with texts referring to her own. Writing and drawing are merged in a number of pages that reproduce rubbings Filipe made of memorial plates encountered in train stations in Britain. Here her drawing is limited to the action of a hand that presses a pencil on a sheet of paper and moves it across to trace rows of writing in embossed letters, the names and professions of trainmen fallen in the wars. Mechanically applied, drawing is used as a recording procedure for writing, while at the same time the writing on the plates that had stayed in place for years on end is imbued with the strokes of the living body performing at a specific time and location.
